ARTIST STATEMENT
For
twenty-five years I have exhibited extensively and successfully installed
over 20 public and private commissioned works throughout the United States.
I have a long history of working with architects, engineers, contractors and
public art committees in bringing about successful solutions to each unique
site.
My work has been well-received both critically and by the public. Often my sculpture becomes a landmark for the community, contributing civic awareness and a positive sense of place. I believe this enthusiastic response by the viewing audience is inspired by the forms and colors of my art that bring a quality of liveliness and energy to a site.
I
try to evoke an appropriateness of scale, and a life-affirming emotional response.
For example, my sculpture "There" in the city center of downtown Oakland
in California answered the criticism by writer Gertrude Stein who said "there
is no there, there." This work contributed a major focal point of civic
pride for the ongoing downtown revitalization.
My sculptures are inspired by nature, by her images and endless palette of color. Like natural forms, my sculptures are rhythmically alive, gracefully poised, and seemingly kinetic: like the moment a bird spreads its wings into flight, like petals of a flower fanned to form a blossom.
My work is fabricated of aluminum elements welded together in progressions to form spiral and curves. These sections are bolted together to create a dynamic, three-dimensional composition. I then paint the surface with tough industrial coatings. These invigorating colors and structures combine to energize the environment with a positive and life-affirming presence.
My public sculptures are site-evocative and also are inspired by the site, by the architecture. The public is also my inspiration, where I can imagine how the viewer will become a participant, being drawn around the sculpture by the evolving views.
